Gutsy Go
Our school’s journey with Erasmus+ project:
“Make Peace Visible – European youth as agents of social change”
Motivation for Participation
Our school has always prioritized not only providing knowledge but also instilling responsibility and a desire to make the world a better place. This is why we eagerly joined the international project “Make Peace Visible – European youth as agents of social change” together with partners from Estonia, Finland and us in Latvia.
We were drawn to the project’s diversity, allowing both students and teachers/mentors to showcase their strengths, overcome challenges, and build confidence while working on meaningful initiatives to improve the world around them.
3-steps Structure
The project was carried out in three phases and the activities were based on an awarded Finnish intervention method called Gutsy Go. The method combines media and pedagogy with peace work and has been designed to prevent polarization and enhance social participation of youth in society.
- Coach Training: Ten of our teachers participated in a three-day training program. This experience equipped them with the skills needed to inspire and guide students in teamwork and personal growth.
- Action Week + Visibility: Under the guidance of eight teachers, our eighth graders completed eight impactful projects. These projects tackled issues such as caring for single seniors, helping homeless animals, addressing environmental pollution, and more. The culmination of their hard work was showcased at a film premiere on November 10, 2023, at Ziemelblazma Cultural Castle and was an emotional and inspiring event for all involved.
- Erasmus+ Youth Event 2024 in Estonia: The project concluded with an international youth event in Laulasmaa, Estonia. Over five days, students from Estonia, Finland and Latvia joined peers from other countries in activities like music, sports, drama, and creative writing. This event allowed students to connect with each other, share experiences, and set new goals in a supportive and engaging environment.
Key Learnings and Benefits
This Erasmus+ project provided invaluable lessons for both students and teachers. For students, it was an opportunity to step out of their comfort zones, develop new skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, and work as part of a team. Teachers gained insights into new teaching methods and the importance of mentoring, rather than just instructing, their students.
Challenges and Highlights
Action week was filled with memorable experiences and challenges. Students participated in activities such as walking dogs at a shelter, baking gingerbread with seniors, and organizing environmental clean-up operations. Each challenge was met with determination, and the support of mentors and project organizers helped students overcome obstacles and achieve success.
The Importance of Coming Together
The grand finale in Laulasmaa was a powerful reminder of the importance of youth coming together. By sharing their experiences and working on common goals, the students developed innovative ideas how to build peace in the world and built lasting connections. The exchange of ideas and mutual support during the event helped strengthen their sense of belonging and purpose.
The Impact on Our School
Participating in this project was a transformative experience for our school.
Students discovered new aspects of themselves, developed empathy and compassion, and gained confidence in their abilities to make a positive impact.
For teachers, it was an opportunity to connect with students in new ways, guiding them not just as educators but as mentors.
Reflections from Our School Community
Principal: “For the team of this project, thank you for the opportunity and the trust!”
Teacher: “It is a great joy for each teacher to observe the development of students, especially when they work to achieve their goals!”
Student: “This project has shown me that each of us can be part of the solution to global problems. It’s important to just act and not be afraid to dream of a better future.”
In Summary, the project was an incredible journey that brought out the best in our students and teachers. It reinforced the idea that small steps can lead to great results, and that together, we can make the world a better place.
